Garden Oaks was laid out in the late 1930s with lots far larger than anything built in Houston since, and the live oaks and pecans planted then are now eighty and ninety years old. They are the reason the neighborhood is worth what it is. They are also, from the grass’s point of view, overwhelming competition.
A mature live oak drinks an enormous amount of water and blankets the yard in shade for most of the day. St. Augustine is the most shade-tolerant turf we have in Houston, but tolerant is not the same as thriving — under a heritage canopy it thins, stretches, and gives up ground to weeds no matter how much fertilizer goes down. Meanwhile decades of leaf litter have pushed the soil acidic, and eighty years of foot traffic and mowing have compacted the old clay underneath.
The answer is not more nitrogen. It is feeding the soil so both the turf and the trees get what they need, deep-root feeding the oaks so they are not taking everything from the top few inches, and being honest with you about which parts of the yard will hold a lawn and which parts want beds or ground cover instead. That last conversation is one a national chain will never have with you.

Can I have a nice lawn under big oaks?+
Partly, and we will be straight with you about where. Under dense heritage canopy no fertilizer program produces thick turf, because the limiting factor is light and root competition, not nutrition. What we can do is keep the turf that does get light healthy and resilient, feed the trees properly so they drain less from the topsoil, and point out the spots where beds or shade-tolerant ground cover will look far better than struggling grass.
Is deep-root tree feeding worth it for my oaks?+
In Garden Oaks it is often the single highest-value thing we do. These trees are decades old, growing in compacted urban soil, competing with turf and hardscape for a limited root zone. Deep-root feeding puts nutrition below the compacted layer where the feeder roots actually are — which supports canopy health and, as a side effect, reduces how much the tree pulls from the top few inches your grass depends on.
