Pretty on day one, starving underneath

Summerwood is one of northeast Houston's newer master-planned communities, and most of its yards started the same way: a few inches of sand and builder-grade sod rolled out over clay that was graded flat and packed down by heavy equipment. That looks great at closing. Three or four summers later it is a different story — thin patches along the driveway, a front yard that browns by late July, and weeds moving into every gap.

The grass is not the problem. The soil under it simply has nothing to give. Compacted fill holds little air or organic matter, so roots stay in the sand layer where they dry out fast. Quick-release synthetic fertilizer adds a burst of top growth those shallow roots cannot carry, and the lawn backslides every year.

Our organic lawn fertilization works from the ground up. Carbon-based granulars and liquid biology rebuild the root zone so St. Augustine can finally push down into the clay. Deeper roots mean better drought tolerance, fewer weeds and a lawn that keeps getting thicker instead of needing a rescue every spring.

Common Summerwood lawn problems we fix

  • ✓ Builder sod that never rooted into the clay below
  • ✓ Driveway and sidewalk strips that scorch first every summer
  • ✓ Brown patch after damp, lake-humid fall weeks
  • ✓ Dollarweed and sedge creeping into thin, overwatered turf
  • ✓ Puddling where graded fill drains poorly after storms

Lakes, greenbelts and a smarter watering schedule

Summerwood sits just south of Lake Houston, and the community's lakes and greenbelts make it a beautiful place to live — and a humid one. Long, damp stretches in spring and fall keep St. Augustine wet overnight, which is exactly when large patch and brown patch take hold. We avoid pushing soft, nitrogen-heavy growth into those cool months and help you shift watering to early morning so blades dry before evening.

Summer brings the opposite problem. Many Summerwood sprinkler systems are set by the builder to run short cycles every day, which keeps moisture in the top inch and trains roots to stay shallow. During your first visit an owner walks the yard with you and suggests a deeper, less frequent schedule that matches what the soil can actually hold. Pair that with our water-wise lawn care and most homeowners use less water while the lawn looks better.

Summerwood FAQ

Questions from Summerwood homeowners

Do you service my part of Summerwood?+

Yes. Our Kingwood team covers all of Summerwood plus the neighboring Lakeshore, Fall Creek, Eagle Springs and Atascocita communities along West Lake Houston Parkway. If you are not sure your street is on our route, call 281-358-3378 and the owner will tell you on the spot.

My Summerwood lawn was builder sod. Why is it still thin years later?+

Builder sod is usually laid on a thin layer of sand over compacted clay fill. The grass roots into that shallow layer and stops, because the clay underneath has almost no air, organic matter or soil life. Feeding the soil — not just the grass — is what finally lets roots push down. Most Summerwood lawns we take over thicken noticeably within the first growing season.

Is your program safe around the lakes and ponds in Summerwood?+

Our organic-first program uses plastic-free, carbon-based granulars and liquid biological supplements rather than quick-release synthetic nitrogen, which is a common source of runoff into neighborhood ponds. We also avoid blanket pre-emergent sprays and never blow granules onto sidewalks or into storm drains.

Will organic care keep my yard up to Summerwood HOA standards?+

Yes. Synthetic programs tend to give a fast flush of green followed by a slump. Organic feeding builds steadier color that holds month to month, which is what keeps a front yard looking maintained when the HOA drives by. We also flag issues like chinch bugs or brown patch early, before they spread.

What does organic lawn care cost in Summerwood?+

Most Summerwood lawns run about $60 per visit on our monthly organic-first program, based on square footage. You get the exact price at your free quote. Your first service is $29.95 and includes a lawn evaluation and consultation with an owner (lawns up to 5,000 sq ft; larger lawns get 50% off the first service).

Why does mechanical core aeration damage Houston gumbo clay?

Houston's gumbo clay is dense and sticky, and it shrinks and swells with every wet and dry spell. A mechanical core aerator punches hollow tines through it, which shears St. Augustine roots and runners, leaves dried-out clay plugs scattered across the lawn, and can crack or puncture shallow underground sprinkler lines. The tines also smear and press the clay along the walls of every hole, so once the soil bakes in the summer heat you're left with brick-hard compaction pockets. Thrive's liquid aeration, included in every program, soaks into the soil uniformly and loosens it from within, with no mechanical disruption to your roots, irrigation or yard.

How does liquid aeration work on St. Augustine turf?

Liquid aeration uses biological penetrants to break the ionic surface tension that holds compacted clay particles tightly bound together. As those bonds relax, the clay opens up, so water and air move down into the soil instead of running off the surface. That unlocks oxygen in the root zone and creates deep root channels that St. Augustine roots and runners follow downward, building a deeper, more drought-tolerant lawn over time. Because it goes on as a spray, there are no plugs, holes or torn turf.

Is Thrive Fertilizing safe for dogs and children immediately after application?

Yes. Our program relies on our proprietary carbon-matrix nutrition and organic-first biological soil conditioners. Every application in our 100% biological program is free of synthetic herbicides, insecticides, chemical pesticides, and synthetic salts. We never post toxic pesticide warning flags or 'Keep Off The Grass' hazard signs. We only place a friendly Thrive service marker to let you know your lawn was fed—with zero stay-off-the-grass warnings required. Your family and pets can enjoy your yard naturally.

Why do you avoid traditional pre-emergent weed killers?

Chemical pre-emergents work by stopping new roots from forming near the soil surface. That keeps weed seeds from sprouting, but it also stunts St. Augustine, which spreads by stolons (above-ground runners) that have to root down as they grow. Years of pre-emergent use leave thin, shallow-rooted turf that struggles to fill bare spots. Instead, we build a thick biological root canopy: living soil and dense, deep-rooted St. Augustine that shades the ground and chokes out weeds naturally.
